Since launching the original Intelligent Spray Control System in 2019, Smart Apply has continued to build out the LiDAR-enabled precision spraying and data solution’s functionality with the goal of making the system more robust in the field and in the Cloud.
Next week, the Smart Apply System GEN2 will officially make its debut at the World Ag Expo, February 14-16, in Tulare, California. To accommodate the swell of specialty crop growers and equipment dealers seeking a solution for rising chemical, labor, and diesel costs as well as data for operation and sustainability reporting requirements, Smart Apply will be exhibiting in an expanded space in the Corteva Agriscience Center, Booths 3521 and 3522. Smart Apply CEO Jerry Johnson and Founder Steve Booher will both be in attendance, providing live demonstrations of the precision spraying (simulated) and data reporting and analytics. Videos with actual growers and dealers will be playing throughout the Expo.
Commenting on the Smart Apply System GEN2, CEO Jerry Johnson says, “Today’s growers face rising costs, mandates on chemical and water use, and verification requirements from governments, export partners and brands. Smart Apply’s GEN2 is a transformational tool that empowers growers to meet these challenges head-on while making their operations simpler, more profitable and sustainable. The ability to integrate with Deere’s Operations Center is another benefit that distinguishes Smart Apply from other sprayer systems.”
Highlights of the GEN2 include:
- Stronger yet more streamlined construction for ease of installation and maintenance
- 50% fewer wires, a single wiring harness and no fuses
- Sealed junction box for near impervious weather protection
- More robust Android tablet
- Ability to pre-program and automate all spray events including multiple tracts and multiple operators – all the operator has to do is drive
- Greatly expanded data analytics and report
- More Cloud storage
- Integration with the Deere Operations Center for additional benefits (optional feature)
A unique – and appealing – aspect of the Smart Apply System is that it is sold as a kit that can be added to virtually any new or used air blast sprayer. This is an obvious attraction to growers who may not want a large capital outlay on yet another piece of equipment but want the benefits of precision spraying and Cloud-based data collection system. Smart Apply technicians as well as dealer precision ag technicians are available to help with air blast sprayer conversions.
The “kit” approach is also attractive to sprayer OEMs that want to replace traditional continuous spray mode of action with environmentally friendly precision spraying that targets individual trees and vines based on size and density. Not only does the Smart Apply System reduce chemical use by an average of 50%, it cuts chemical run off up to 93% and air borne drift by up to 87%.
“The environmental benefits of the Smart Apply System are second to none,” Johnson says. “What makes it even more powerful is our system digitally document each spray session growers can use for reporting to government agencies, export bodies, brands, and consumers. They can prove the positive impacts with hard data.”
The Smart Apply System is specifically designed for growers of high value crops such as tree fruits, tree nuts, grapes, hops, and nurseries. Sales in these segments are strong and the company ended 2022 above budget.
